Summer 2010 (July 27, 2010)
Jojoba Oil
Refined jojoba (pronounced "ho-HO-bah"), a colorless and odorless oil, is an ideal beauty product. It is inexpensive, easy to find, available at our clinic (because we all use and recommend it), and can literally be used from head to toe.
It is a facial moisturizer and so much more... Because jojoba oil closely resembles human sebum, our skin accepts it very well without the threat of breakouts or reactions. If you are oily or combination-skinned and afraid of putting any oil on your face, do not worry. Jojoba oil actually helps to balance skin's sebum, so it moisturizes dry skin and eases the oil production in oily skin. Apply jojoba oil by mixing two drops of it in your moisturizer, or use it sparingly on its own. If you are unsure about your skin type or jojoba usage, feel free to make an appointment and Dr. Feldman will evaluate your condition.
For New and Referred Patients
The best compliment you can give us is to tell others about your experience and refer your family and friends. Please help us spread the word about our clinic and our services and let them know that they can have a free 15 minute consultation with Dr. Feldman to see if this practice is right for them.
Examples of reasons patients set up consultations are: new patients seeking a new family practice physician (for babies up through geriatrics) and /or someone with health care concerns who wants a physician with an integrative approach.
The consultations are by appointment only. However, the prospective patient has the option of choosing a phone or in-person consultation at the office. Please call our office for more information.
Healthy Tips
Choose a family practice for all of your primary care needs
What services can a family physician provide? This seems like an obvious answer, but many people do not realize the full scope of services that family physicians can offer:
- general check-ups for newborns through geriatric patients
- well child visits
- well woman/pap exams
- acute visits for illness/injury/pain
- school/work physicals
- management of chronic and acute diseases
- management of prescription medications
- wellness visits for all ages
- visits for mental health issues
- management and coordination of care for elderly or disabled patients
- any other issues that require support and referrals to other resources or providers
At IFHA, Dr. Feldman has a passion for preventive and integrative medicine. In addition to the previously mentioned services, she also provides:
- visits and support for vaccinations
- management of weight problems
- establishing a customized integrative plan for patients to manage their health
Family physicians used to be known as "general practitioners" and are capable of caring for entire families through every stage of life.
Keep hydrated in this hot, humid weather
How do I know if I am drinking enough water? The human body is estimated to be made up of approximately 60 to 70 percent water. Blood along with muscles, lungs, and brain all contain mostly water. The body needs water to regulate body temperature and to provide the means for nutrients to travel to all organs. Water also transports oxygen to your cells, removes waste, and protects the joints and organs. Body water is lost daily through urination, respiration, and sweating. Diuretics such as caffeine (liquid and pills) and alcohol result in the need to drink more water because they trick your body into thinking you have more water than you need. Symptoms of mild dehydration include chronic pains in joints, muscles, lower back, headaches, and constipation. A strong odor to your urine, along with a yellow or amber color indicates that you may not be getting enough water. Note that B Vitamins will make your urine bright yellow. Thirst is a sign of moderate dehydration as you need water long before you feel thirsty.
A good way to estimate how much water is needed in ounces per day is to take your body weight in pounds and divide that number in half. If you exercise, you should drink another eight ounce glass of water for every 20 minutes you are active. If you drink alcohol or caffeine, you should drink at least an equal amount of water. When you are traveling on an airplane, it is good to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are on board the plane. If you live in an arid climate, you should add another two servings per day. As you can see, your daily need for water can add up quickly.
Twenty percent of your water intake should come from the foods you eat. The rest of your water intake should come from the beverages you drink. Water and calorie-free drinks like caffeine-free herbal teas are the best choice. Sports drinks may be beneficial, but tend to have added sugar, preservatives, and calories that are unnecessary. Juices are similar to soda in that they have sugar/high fructose corn syrup and other additives without a lot of vitamins and nutrients. You are much better off just eating the whole fruit. If you get bored with plain water, try adding a bit of lemon or lime or a small amount of pure fruit juice for a touch of flavor. There are some brands of flavored water available, but watch for extra calories and additives. Try to use non-leaching water bottles (Sigg or Klean Kanteen or any glass bottles make good reusable bottles).
